5 Ways to Make Sure Your Heating System Is Winter-Ready

When it comes to wintertime comfort, nothing may be as important as your home’s heating system. But after a few seasons of nonuse, it’s possible that your equipment may not be ready to take on the cold temperatures. Fortunately, you can keep your appliance running strong with just a little preventive maintenance by Ron Hammes Refrigeration. To avoid the need for emergency HVAC repairs when you need warmth the most, here are a few ways you can prepare your heating system for the winter.

How to Prepare the Heating System for Winter

1. Clean the Equipment

Clean dust and debris away from the surface of the equipment, as well as the internal components—such as the fans and blowers. Without cleaning, these parts may operate inefficiently or stop working completely. Take care to also remove any clutter around the equipment, such as boxes or cleaning supplies, as they may present a fire risk.

2. Seal Ducts

Turn the system on and feel around the ventilation for any drafty spots. This airflow could be a sign that the ductwork is leaking. These leaks could prevent even distribution of warmth throughout your home, as well as contribute to inefficient energy use. While you will eventually need to have a professional repair the ventilation system, you can seal the leak with duct tape. Contact Ron Hammes Refrigeration when the time comes.

3. Install a Fresh Filter

Your HVAC system relies on a filter to remove dust, allergens, and other debris from the air. However, after about 60 to 90 days of use, the filter can become clogged. These clogs can impede performance, increase energy bills, and contribute to poor air quality. Before winter, put in a clean filter and exchange it every three or four months.

4. Adjust the Thermostat

Program your thermostat to a temperature that is comfortable, so you can avoid excessive energy use throughout the winter. Once the system is on, make sure the setting matches the actual temperature in the house. If it doesn’t match, the thermostat may need to be reset or repaired.

5. Schedule a Tuneup

It’s always a good idea to call an HVAC repair specialist for a prewinter inspection and tuneup. During this evaluation, your contractor will clean and lubricate moving parts, so they can run effectively throughout the season. They will also be able to detect and resolve problems early on to help you avoid emergency breakdowns.
